I’ve been starting to play with off-camera flash photography lately. Since I aquired my Canon 60D I’ve been able to trigger my flash remotely via Canon’s IR E-TTL flash system.

Online Shopping And Why I Do It
Saturday, February 19th, 2011Recently in Australia there has been a big beat up in the press about online shopping from some of the major retailers. Their issue is that overseas imports under $1000AUD do not attract the 10% GST that you would have to pay if you purchased the item in Australia. Click to continue »
New Toys Are Always Fun
Sunday, October 11th, 2009Well the other day I finally caved and purchased myself a DSLR camera. I have wanted one for ages but thought the price for a half decent kit was too much for me to spend. This all changed when I found a Canon 1000D with twin-lens kit for a lot less than I had seen before so I pounced. And I couldn’t be happier. Even though it is on the cheap end for a DSLR, I am overly impressed with the quality of the photos it takes. I look forward to learning how to make full use of this camera.
If you want to see some of my shots you can click here or in the future you can click the link up the top right that will take you to a photo page.
Bleh
Friday, August 21st, 2009Bah what a time to get sick. Day off from work, and a party to go to tonight. I blame YOU. Yes that’s right I can see you while you’re reading this. Now go get me a coffee to say sorry.
‘Utegate’ Saga Continues
Tuesday, August 11th, 2009Reading my headline you may be thinking “Ooh he’s going to discuss that OzCar scandal thing.” You would be dead wrong. In fact the saga I refer to is the bastardisation of the English language by some poor excuse for a tabloid journalist that for some reason continues to grab headlines. I can only imagine they had this thought process:
- This is a possible scandal.
- Watergate was a huge political scandal in the United States.
- Maybe I can add ‘gate’ to the end of ‘Ute’ to make this sound more significant than it really is. Maybe people will pay attention to my hyperbolic journalism now and ignore the fact I don’t really have any legitimate sources. This is the best idea I have ever had. Hand me my Pulitzer now.
Pretty sure I have nailed that one right on the head there. Not only was ‘Utegate’ not a scandal, but it turned out to be completely fake. Now, for some reason, overzealous Labor party supporters want the head of the opposition kicked out of his position for the rabble when really it was piss poor journalism that blew it all out of proportion. In my opinion you would do the country a greater service by slapping the journo who penned the term ‘Utegate’ over the back of the head and making them sit in the corner with a dunce’s cap for everyone to see.
Orbis – The Less Stupid Cousin Of The Segway
Monday, August 10th, 2009As far as I can tell the Segway is used purely by nerds with too much money, overweight mall security guards in the US, and Gob Bluth on the show Arrested Development. No one secretly wants to be seen on one though, and when you get there you can’t fold it up to hide your embarrassment. Enter the Orbis.
The Orbis is similar to the Segway in that it uses gyroscopes to keep the vehicle upright, but it differs by only having one wheel instead of the two the Segway has. It also comes apart and collapses for portability and easy storage. The Orbis can reach speeds of up to 22km/h which is more than enough to hoon along on the footpath or down the walkway in a shopping centre chasing a shoplifter while you have half a doughnut in your mouth. Having only one wheel allows it to be lighter therefore needing a less bulky battery, keeping it mobile. I also find the design kind of elegant and, perhaps, ever so slightly cool?
Strangely enough I don’t see this as becoming the popular way to go to work and save the planet, but more of a way to get to the car/bus/train/whatever with having to do as little physical exertion as possible.
…Unless it catches on in Japan

Futurama Set To Return With All New Episodes
Sunday, August 9th, 2009Leela: So what does this mean for us and our many fans?
Professor Farnsworth: It means we’re back on the air!
[the crew is still silent]
Professor Farnsworth: Yes, flying on the air in our mighty spaceship!
[the crew cheers wildly]
Bender: We’re back, baby!
(Quote from the Fururama movie ‘Bender’s Big Score’)
Due to pressure from fans of the show and the overwhelming success of the recently released Futurama movies, Fox has decided to bring the TV series back on the air with 26 new episodes!
Originally Fox was looking to replace the original charactres and they had released casting calls for the new cast members. Eventually they buckled under the pressure of fans and rehired the old cast to appear back in the new episodes.

Large Hadron Collider To Come Back Online in November
Friday, August 7th, 2009Pencil November down as the month in which the Earth collapses (I joke, I joke).
CERN, the organisation that runs the LHC, released a statement saying that they plan to restart the world’s largest particle accelerator. They will initially run the LHC at a lower energy threshold than previously (3.5 TeV), but it will allow them to learn how it behaves and allow them to safely increase it’s power.
Even if they don’t discover the elusive Higgs-Boson particle, a lot of science will come out of this machine that will let us better understand the universe in which we live. At the very least let’s get some black holes happening.
